"Teach Me Sex" with Anita from Sex Assist
I am thrilled to share my latest "Teach Me Sex" interview with Anita Martin, an experienced COTA, Certified Clinical Sexologist, and founder of Sex Assist. Goodness was it educational!... and steamy!
With 15 years of experience as a COTA, Anita has found her passion and niche in the occupation of sex and intimacy. She now owns and operates her business, Sex Assist, through which she helps both individuals and couples find a better outlook through sex and improve their communication. How amazing is that!? She is also a bartender and foodie at heart, which I think makes her even more relatable!
Anita was so easy to talk with and I loved her honesty and self-disclosure. She understands how hard it can be to communicate our wants and needs, which is a reason why she wants to help others work through those hurdles in their own relationship(s). As occupational therapists who understand the importance of holistic care, which includes addressing sex and intimacy, I think that speaks to all of us.
In this episode of "Teach Me Sex" Anita touches on the additional difficulty that individuals in long term relationships may have with communicating their wants and needs. While it's never appropriate to make assumptions about our clients, I think this brings up a great point and is simply something to be aware of and take into consideration during our practice. In my experience, sometimes difficulty with communication will be something our clients will come right out and say. Sometimes we might pick up on this and help our clients build this awareness and then develop strategies. She also shares her number one "Teach Me Sex" tip and spoiler alert, it's eye contact! As OTs we understand the impact of our verbal and non verbal communication as a requirement or enhancer for occupational engagement. Well, sex and intimacy is no different!
A big "Teach Me Sex" thank you to Anita for educating us and sharing about herself so that we can learn about ourselves!
I can't say it enough but I'm loving what Anita stands for and what she is doing with her practice, Sex Assist! If you're interested in hearing our entire convo (it's under 15 minutes!) you can check it out here!
